Fathers Matter in Early Childhood Development: Launching a Groundbreaking KAP Workshop in Lehae Township

On Thursday, 9th May 2025, the Power of Women and Children NPC, in proud collaboration with HEARTLINES, officially launched a transformative workshop in Lehae Township, south of Johannesburg, under the banner of the Fathers Matter initiative. This marks the beginning of a six-week pilot program designed to deepen Early Childhood Development (ECD) Practitioners’ Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) regarding the vital role of fathers in the early years of a child’s life.

A Groundbreaking Initiative

Often overlooked in parenting conversations, fathers play a crucial role in shaping a child’s emotional, cognitive, and social development. The Fathers Matter in Early Childhood Development KAP Workshop aims to shift perceptions, build inclusive parenting practices, and equip ECD practitioners with the necessary tools to engage fathers meaningfully in their children’s early learning journey.

This pilot program is the first of its kind in Lehae Township, a community that stands to benefit greatly from efforts aimed at strengthening family units and promoting nurturing care environments for children.

The First Session: A Powerful Start

The inaugural session held on May 9th saw enthusiastic participation from local ECD practitioners, community leaders, and representatives from both partnering organizations. Through interactive activities, reflective discussions, and knowledge-sharing, participants began to explore the foundational concepts of father involvement and its impact on child development.

Key topics included:

• Challenging stereotypes and cultural norms about fatherhood.

• Understanding the emotional and developmental benefits of father engagement.

• Practical strategies for involving fathers in ECD programs.

Facilitators created a safe space for open dialogue, where participants shared personal stories, voiced challenges, and expressed hope for stronger, more involved father figures in their communities.
