STATEMENT ON THE FIFTH WOMAN FOUND DEAD IN THE KEMPTON PARK AREA

Power of Women and Children International (POFWC) expresses its deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the fifth woman whose body was discovered in the wider Kempton Park area, amid an ongoing investigation into the deaths of women whose bodies have been found in and around Kempton Park and Olifantsfontein.

The discovery of yet another woman’s body is deeply disturbing and has understandably caused fear, grief and anger among women, families and communities. Every woman’s life has value, and no woman should have to fear being harmed simply for travelling, walking, working, exercising or going about her daily life.

We welcome the intensified investigation by the South African Police Service and the deployment of a multidisciplinary task team to establish the circumstances surrounding these deaths, determine whether there are connections between the cases, identify those responsible and ensure that they are brought to justice. We also urge the public to avoid unverified speculation while the investigation is underway and to share credible information with law-enforcement authorities.

POFWC calls for urgent and visible action to strengthen the safety of women in Kempton Park, Rhodesfield, Olifantsfontein and surrounding communities. This must include effective policing, rapid investigation of missing-person reports, safe public spaces, adequate lighting, community safety partnerships and meaningful accountability for perpetrators of gender-based violence and femicide.

We stand in solidarity with the affected families and with all women who are living with fear because of violence in their communities. We call on women and community members to remain vigilant, to support one another, to avoid isolated areas where possible, and to report suspicious activity or information that may assist investigators.

Our message is clear: women deserve to live, work, travel and move freely without fear. We cannot normalize the killing of women. We must continue to speak out, demand accountability and work collectively towards communities where women and children are safe.
